Student Design Awards, RSA, Brief: Sleep Matters

Student Design Awards, RSA

Sleep Matters 02

Brief: Design a product, service, or system to improve health and wellbeing by encouraging and enabling better sleep.

The purpose:

*create an activity that increases mental wellbeing or boosts positive behaviours that impact positivity on sleep.

*A response that addresses one of the clinical reasons for bad sleep.

*A design that improves the experience of an around sleep.

Focus will be focusing on the topic of: Happiness.

The theme chosen is Happiness, to promote self belief and to create a better environment. The theme happiness also stems to more serious issues such as suicidal rates.

The Dark side of Happiness by theorist Meik Wiking

(Information gathered through Meik Wiking documentary)

Facts about Happiness:

Denmark is the happiest country in the world.

2016- more than 500 people kill themselves or 3 times as many which are killed in traffic.

Denmark is ranked in the middle of suicidal rate.

Why is the happiest country not at the bottom of the list when it comes to suicide?

This explores the study of happiness.

When musicians see musical notes they can hear music in their mind; the sound of joy, the feeling of a connection.

This is a metaphor to explain silence of people living life which they feel is not worth living. Their silence is the dark side of happiness.

Themes explored through happiness is income, jobs, loneliness, social media, suicide happiness paradox.

Being Sceptical- not easily convinced ; having doubts or reservations, relates tot he theory of certain  knowledge is impossible.

Happiness is subjective, there are different perceptions of what happiness is.

Happiness can be broken down, exploring different constraints to create happiness.

Different emotions such as worry, depression, stress, happy, laughter, love.

If your day contains positive characteristics, your day will be reported a lot more happier.

Eudaimonic is an ancient greek word for happiness. This theory was suggested a good life came from a meaningful life so people had a sense of purpose.

There are patterns in happiness, which people have in common.

Life expectancy- try to use the same method as others.

You are the expert to know/ judge if you are happy. How do we feel about our lives.

Social Position

social comparisons matter:

They impact how we feel about our lives. Studies show spring and summer is the time where people feel the worst. Summer is a nightmare of feeling lonely, when you see other people together hanging out.

If you see people surrounded by friends and  your by yourself you naturally feel lonely. Being the odd one out is difficult.

Unemployment

Being unemployed, you loose connection with others therefore there is a higher risk of suicide. The facts show a higher rate of suicide of low employment than high unemployment.

How social media affects our perception of reality. The idea of life being perfect. For instance the idea of a perfect breakfast, the concept of 'my life is better than yours'. The investigation carried out between two groups; one group was allowed on Facebook and the other was banned for a week. The results show the group banned from Facebook was proven to feel a lot happier.

Happier states have a higher rate of suicidal death rate. Being exposed to other people's happiness can question  are own. To improve this we need to build a bridge of equality for the most vulnerable.

Dalai Lama

Buddhism and Happiness

Researched gathered from the Dalai Lama Documentary.

We all have the potential, the quest of happiness, what does happiness mean?

Happiness is described in the sense of satisfaction. Happiness is not some pleasure experience but a neutral sort of experience, that can bring deep satisfaction. what makes happiness...peace. Peace comes from warm heartedness. This reduces ill feeling towards others. It also reduces distrust. We are mentally, emotionally, intellectually the same.

If you do wrong things like harming others, you get negative consequences. If you help others, bring happiness, you get benefit. More inner strength there, and more sort of confidence of purpose of life. Fulfilment about that purpose, then you always feel happy. Friendship is essential, friendship comes trust. Fear and trust go contradiction. More fear there cannot develop trust.

We fear, how can we develop our friendship. Loneliness is the course of depression. Jealousy brings distrust, distrust brings frustration then the lonely feeling atomically comes. Lonely feeling is not creation of environment, but it is the creation of your own mental attitude. There is hope if you achieve a different goal. Eventually we can develop a more deeper experience in our own life. Same body but a new person.

Mo Gawdat Theory

An Algorithm for Happiness

Happiness is in looking at the glass and seeing the truth of the glass. Seeing the half full side and being grateful for it. Seeing the half empty side and saying, can I do anything about it?

Happiness is what you think about what the world gives you. If life meets your expectations your happy.

We mix two states: happiness and fun. Happiness is that peaceful, contentment feeling of, 'I like the world right now.' Fun is the modern world's replacement of happiness. When people are unable to reach the state of happiness, they go out on the weekend and forget about their worries the brain stops thinking. As long as they stop thinking, they think they feel happy. It's not because they are at peace but they have spent the unhappy thoughts.

The idea of suffer can be chosen or you can decide to accept the harsh reality. Try to make a change each day and each day it will become slightly better.

The happiness formula:

Happiness- the quality or state of being happy. A good fortune; pleasure; contentment; joy

Happiness isn't about getting what you want all the time it is about loving what you have and being grateful for it.

 The Butterfly Effect

Chaos Theory

Tiny changes in big systems can have complex results. This concept developed by Edward Lorenz. 1960.

The effect is derived from the metaphorical example of details of a tornado, being influenced by minor perturbation such as flapping the wings of a butterfly several weeks earlier. A small butterfly can have a dramatic effect of an event, like a cause of a tornado on the other side of the world. Each path produces a different outcome. The actions started out small, changing these small steps, the devastating outcome could be prevented.

Chaos in graphic design

Chaos and geometric order.

Geometric order and chaos include two different concepts. Geometric order is represented in a mathematical order which includes, (in 2D: line, circle, quarter, or in 3D: plane, sphere, cube) and ideal relationships (perpendicularly, parallelism, symmetry, rhythm/regularity). However, Chaos is the opposite to geometric order.  Chaos includes forms and relationships which are complex and difficult to describe with the language of classic maths.

Figure 1 explored two graphic compositions, the first composition exploring a chaotic background with a regular area (geometric area), compared to the right image which shows a geometric background which includes a chaotic area.

Non Format

Resource: Non Format. Love Song- Die Gestalten Velog (Book)

Kjell Ekorn and Jon Forss founded Non Format. The practise focus on innovative graphic design and image- making. The work combines a contemporary, stark and edgy aesthetic.

The inspiration was taken from Japanese magazine Cut.
Existing guide books

The Golden book fortune teller

Format: Golden packaging, golden edged pages.

A broad range of fortune telling gift box, hard back. The purpose of the guide book is to understand the future. Initiates meanings for names, zodiac signs, and birthdays, unveils the significance behind friendships, colour choice, and love interest, provides productions, from career, to self-fulfilment, romance, and health. Includes context fro astrologists, fortune-tellers and mystics to uncover what is foretold. The concept of attracting good fortune.

Meaning

The colour gold is associated with illumination, love, compassion, courage, passion, magic, and wisdom. Gold is a precious metal, that is associated with wealth grandeur, and prosperity as well as sparkle, glitz, and glamour.

The spiritual meaning of gold?

The colour of wealth, success, and status, the colour of achievement and triumph. It inspires knowledge of spirituality and deep understanding of self and soul. Calligraphic, decorative, perhaps reflect traditional base context. Perhaps relating to a spiritual concept of religion relating to religious books.

The typeface is altered to reflect a more cryptic, mysterious, magical approach. The idea of beating the ordinary.

The content, inside includes illustrations which are magical, conceptual, which relates to the concept of the zodiac theme. This creates the idea of achieving the impossible, which also creates a positive mindset for the audience.

The Philosophy of Beards:

'The absence of the beard is usually a sign of physical and moral weaknesses.' This concept relates to the metaphor meaning of a lion, the mane of a lion reflects power, strength, without the main will reflect weakness.

The content reveals beards throughout history and their symbolism. The book is republished from the 1850s edition, the new edition includes illustrations of different beards. It explores the physiological, artistic, and historical views.

The concept of the cover relates to the imagery of warning signs, these signs are yellow with black lettering/ symbols. This concept relates to the idea of symbolism. The illustration is centred however layer out in a diamond shape to reflect the conceptual approach of warning signs. the purpose of signs is to inform, warn you of a hazard ahead. This perhaps relates to society views and ignorance towards the perception of beards. The purpose of this is to create hierarchy and importance towards the topic of beards.

The typography is San Serif bold, to suggest power and intimidation, which the male gender is usually associated, signified with.

This example is the most successful through the innovation and conceptual idea. The topic is unusual and stands out compared to the other examples, as it is unique.

Bad Girls through out history

The book explores 100 revolutionary women, highlighted in an illustrative style. The designer has included essays and illustration for each person. This example explores the concept of bad but in a best sense of the word: challenged the status and changed the rules for all who followed.

The illustrative approach relates to fashion illustration, the media of watercolour creates a more sensitive approach. The calligraphic style relates to a decorative, feminine approach. The lower case perhaps relates to the theme of genders. The hard book format creates more of a time capsule to function for a long time. The purpose of this is to address feminism and create importance towards women through out history.

A little book of Astrology

Explores understanding of certain characters, explores the themes of mythology. Content- explores character traits which are written in the stars Explores star meanings and shows how to interpret the cosmos, not only day to day but far ahead into the future. The purpose of the book is to initiate a deeper understanding of yourself. Relates to the concept of stars, explores metallic tones to create a magical approach.

The format of the book being 'little' resembles the visual perception of stars when infant they are much bigger in size. This relates to the idea of unraveling a person, to find out their true traits.

The type is exaggerated to relate to the concept of linking stars to create typeface. It includes a illustrative approach to create an innovative, creative approach to make the information stand out, compared to other competitors, as this idea os already explored.

The use of the golf foil represents the idea of hope and spirit, to reassure the audience. It includes geometric, mythological drawings to address the idea of complexity and infinity.

The little book of meditations

The format of the size was successful, however the content was objective and at times very similar. This concept could be developed further by perhaps changing the typeface to a more sophisticated typeface as it looks generic. To develop this idea further, the designer could adapt more contextual meaning and purpose into the culture of meditation. To develop this further, I could explore subjective approaches.

Throughout this research , the guide books are hard copies with foil effect to represent positive energy through the interpretation of spirit and wisdom. To develop my practise further, I could explore foil processes and metallic spray for the edged pages. This concept relates to religious historical approaches which could be explored when designing the final outcome. The product will have to be bespoke, and eye-catching to stand out from competition. This could be through illustrations.

Possible Ideas:

*Mini guide book of quotes,; could be adapted as a word search.
*Explore the Chaos theory through the butterfly effect, play will scale and size, investigate the cycle of life, the process of the butterfly, gather information through tropical world.
*Contradict the brief by creating work which is subjective through a chaotic nature, influenced by chaos graphic design.
*Incorporate the oriental culture: through Dalai Lama theory of happiness.
*Create a concept through the dark side of happiness, how to fight negativity.
*Explore existing remedies  to prevent stress, perhaps this is generic.
*Consider how the idea will function, perhaps the reader can carry out an activity, perhaps visiting somewhere peaceful.

Existing Remedies to help sleep

What are the cliches?

*Sip warm milk and honey.
*Practise cognitive behavioural theory: usually focusing on discovering and changing the thoughts and feelings that trigger depression and stress.
*Create a sleep friendly environment.
*Manage stress through exercise such as yoga, meditation, writing in journal before sleep.
* Adopt a bedtime ritual: make it a priority to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
*Brew herbal tea.

What to create

*Choose happiness- cards of happiness
*game format of a puzzle
*Subjective imagery which functions as a map
*Design 100 illustrations
*A publication based on a positive attitude
*Subjective imagery which relates to quotes

Initial Ideas:

*Word search concept
*Chaos theory concept with typography
*Sanskrit and calligraphy quotes- incorporating culture such as buddhism
*A book explores peaceful places- an activity (landscape)
*A pack of Happiness cards: One side of illustrations, the other of typography.

Chaos type: explored through scanner technique

Collages of butterfly illustrations

Buddhism illustrations

Photography of peaceful places

Meek Theory Triangulation- incorporate this concept through geometric shapes and Chaos graphic design.

Primary Research of visiting Peaceful places around Leeds

Why Tropical world?

The reasoning of visiting tropical world, is to experience places which create a positive mind-set. The concept of chaos theory relates to butterflies. However, experiencing tropical on a Saturday, the place was overcrowded and the target market did not relate to the target market aimed for this project. There was a lot of young kids which created a more load environment, in some ways I felt out of place. Therefore, to further my research I will explore more places in Leeds which create a better experience for a mature target market.

Experimentations

Illustrative Idea- Created on Illustrator

This design could be improved by using a San serif  typeface to create clarity. To develop this idea further perhaps colour could be incorporated. It could create something more visually exciting to relate to feeling and joy. The concept of word searches can be perceived as boring and perhaps daed. To develop this further and create a modern interpretation. The layout could be adapted on Excel and could create illustrative approach. The use of the grid system could be interesting, perhaps the grid system isn't there but the layout of the words are on a textured background. The idea has a lot of potential. How would this idea function? This idea could be adapted into a zine or a puzzle, in the sense of a modern interpretation which would be sold in Urban Outfitters. The target audience would be aimed at young teenagers.

Publication Idea

The idea is a publication based on all the peaceful places to visit in Leeds. This idea is successful for functionality. However the layout may act as a guide book which may come across more formal rather than creative. From the critique this idea was perceived cliche and perhaps already in the industry. This idea may come across to formal for the target market of young teenagers. The aim is to create something innovative which will change people's perception of the ideal world. This design is not successful for achieving this.

Chaos Theory Design

Exploring blur type on Photoshop. How to develop this further? The design is influenced through the Nike 'Turn out of control' typeface which explores a chaotic nature.

Applying the technique of a scanner to manipulate the typeface. This will act as a reverse of feeling anxious. The problem with this design is how will this impact individuals?

During the critique, this typeface was perceived as interesting, However, considering how will this function? The concept could relate talking about the chaos theory and inform the audience.

Publication based on faith

Faith is a strong believe and interest which helps people to keep a positive mindset. The investigation will stem into researching into culture and creating something more visually pleasing, a bespoke book which will be precious, something the reader will feel they want to keep. It will explore the views and the activities held in Buddhism. This idea will be illustrative. During the critique this idea was seen as already done, and perhaps to complex. Too many ideas explored which may be communicated as confusing.

Create a product based on a card game

A prototype produced to show the idea of a quote card. The idea is to create a set of cards for a whole year and each morning you would read a card before getting ready. The use of quotes comes from psychology that it is proven to create a positive attitude towards life. This idea was seen as most innovative as it is different and id a product which my practise has not explored. During the critique, to develop the design further, investigate into texture and colour to create the front covers. Typeface needs to be invested, perhaps a typeface more decorative, perhaps calligraphic to create something more visually pleasing. The functionality of the cards is more successful compared to the other designs. Perhaps the colour of the cards could be associated with the concept of a rainbow to address hope and joy.

Development

 Colour Pallet

Theory behind colour:

"A light blue is not associated with a poor mood, but a dark blue is," Whorwell said. "The shade of color is more important than the color itself."

Rainbow Symbolism and Meaning:

Spirit Whispers:

Do you dream of treasure, beloved?

Everyone is searching for treasure, something that fullfills a longing from deep within, something tht cannot be put into words.

Do you know where *your* Treasyre is, is this treasure that seems so elusive? My darling within every heart is an infinite sea of treasures- just waiting to be  discovered. Seek there in these vast secret caverns and there you will find magic, mystery and jewels beyond your wildest dreams, for there and there alone is the map to your personal treasure…. – Presley Love

Rainbow Symbolism: What is the meaning of a rainbow? Rainbows speak directly to our heart and soul, fillinf us with awe and energies of liquid love pouring all around us. Rainbows bring the promise that the troubles of today will surely come to pass, hold strong in your faith and vision and the rainbow will bring fresh beginnings, and new prosperity.

Rainbow, a symbol of magical Blessings

The rainbow is also an extraordinary symbol of following our hearts desire and purpose, to get to the end of the rainbow is a symbol for the celebration of fulfilment.

The end of the Rainbow signifies a pot of a gold and the magic that surrounds your dreams coming true, and the end of the rainbow is the enchanted magcal land of leprechauns.

Rainbow symbolism has such a powerful meaning to each of us and graciously bestows the energy of blessings. The symbolism of a Rainbow intuitively tells us to hold onto hope, to believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that sacred blessings open to us when we are following our hearts desire. And the symbol of the Rainbow tells us that we are guided to our hearts desire when we open to spirit to let it guide us.

Double Rainbow Symbolism: Serendipity

A double rainbow meands serendipitous magic is on the way, the path of personal magic is opening for you. Be true to yourself and your dreams and know that the Universe is compiring on your behalf. This also tells you that your intuition is keener than you might have imagined, it says “it’s a sure sign to trust your vibes”.

The rainbow is comprised of 7 colors. The order of a Rainbow is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

Butterfly Effect:

Meaning of butterflies:

Butterflies are deep and powerful representations of life. Many cultures associatethe butterfly with our souls. The butterfly represents change, hope, and life.

What is the spiritual meaning of seeing butterflies?

The native Americans, the butterfly is a symbol of change, joy, and colour.

Are butterflies a sign of Goodluck?

Butterflies have a great deal of luck, both good and bad. Louisiana it is thought of goodluck will follow shortly after a white butterfly into your house and flies around you.

What does it mean to have butterflies in your stomache?

To get butterflies in your stomache is an idiomatic expression that means you are anxious and have nervous feeling in your stomach.

Contextual Research of graphic design

DALILA is an Airbrush experiment technique due to a new graphical trend. The effect was created on Photoshop. Designed by Dalila Zewdie

Branding, digital art, packaging

House of Graphics

House of graphics is a borderline gradient experiemtn to test the visual perception, in particular to assess the effects of deep colours ad limits on huan eyes.

The technique:

This digital technique has been created with Photoshop.

This contextual research is useful for exploring textures and colour. It also helps with product design.

Development

The gradient fill explores the concept of feeling and texture influenced through the contextual research from Dalila Zewdie.

Designing Quote Cards on Illustrator

Using a gradient fill to initiate texture an feeling. The idea of colour blending create the illusion of changing attitude. It also creates a contemporary fun feel towards the product. The concept of colour is explored. To develop the design further, each letter from the word Happiness is presented on the card in relation to the concept of a games card.

Feedback given suggests adding an illustrative concept of a butterfly or a triangle to be based in the centre. The triangle coming from the Happiness theory and equation. The concept of butterflies could be positioned in a different place to suggest movement. This could relate to the idea of movement of someone moving on from a bad event that has happened.

I decided to keep the design minimalistic, as I felt this may complicate the design and there may be too many concepts explored.

Exploring layouts through grid systems

The rest of the quotes will be shown in final outcome

A bodoni typeface is explored to create a more decorative approach. As the target market is mainly a feminine target market, it was important the typeface was decorative. During the critique it was stated that perhaps this type could be developed further by applying a texture in the type instead of a solid colour. The gold colour shows the concept of strength and hope, relating to the concept of finding the treasure in the end.

Different layouts are explored from different quotes. The designs had to make sure it was simple but easily communicated the message of the quote. The use of space was important. The cards had to be clear to convey to idea of the audience finding clarity and hope.

Using Indesign for print

The design was placed on a front to back layout. The alright tool was used to ensure each piece was printed front to back accurately. 52 cards was designed as a mock up, as this is the amount of cards in a deck of cards.

Format- Matt 300gsm paper for card aesthetic.

Final Outcome

The final outcome did not come out successfully. The design of the quote cards printed out successfully, exploring colour and texture. However the packaging was not successful. Unfortunately due to time mangement, I was not able to develop this further. To develop my practise further an investigation of boxes in graphic design would ave been appropriate. The exploration of format. Perhaps a more hard back box would create a more professional outcome as the packaging looks like it needs developing further. As a designer, this was my first packaging design. For future preference, allow more time for prototypes and investigation when it comes to making. Think about which materials work well, and which materials are more aesthetically pleasing.
