Their inspiration for choosing
the creative industry began in their childhood. For instance, Dirk collected the
Bob Dylan poster by Milton Glaser, as Dirk feels this represented his
‘childish’ idea of an artist. Johanna influences was again from the music
industry, where she used to play the cello and was involved in a creative
community. Johanna then developed posters for the concerts she performed in.
Johanna was highly dedicated and driven towards this role.
In Dirk’s young
career, he worked for Total design. The former team leader and current director
Hans Brand said to Dirk, ‘You don’t have to prejudice on what was beautiful and
what is ugly.’ Dirk later on explains nothing is beautiful until the meaning is
explained.
In Johanna young
career, she worked for AKI where opportunities were held whiles working abroad.
However, working for this company, she felt a graphic design role model was
missing. Johanna then worked for Dirk as an intern. They later on created a
partnership.
For one of their
design briefs for designing signage for a University, they explored with Futura
and military font to create a new type face, HSD Sans. They developed this typeface
further by applying an element and repeating it to create a pattern. They
developed 7 new typefaces.
Studio Lauke Sieben
uses the techniques of holes, transparency, complexity and layering. A type
face that stood out to me, is the work they were asked to create for a
financial magazine; which their work featured on the front cover.
Rijksakademie
is a workshop created for students where they withhold events. The design has
multiple layers of meaning in a design. For instance, a practice for dentistry
asked for this logo to be hung up in their workforce.
Aatjan
Renders is a photographer which asked Studio Lauke and Siebein to create a logo.
The company wanted to incorporate the Renders personality into the work. Aatjan
Renders was such a football fan and they incorporated that aspect into the
work. The flash zig zag line for the nose represents the flash in
photography. They designed the logotype,
typography, letterhead, envelopes, business cards, stickers, an
announcement card for his studio’s move and the website.
This example shows a modern approach used by cutting up letterforms to create something interesting yet readable
Steve Simpson
Steve Simpson is known
for his packaging designs, quirky characters and illustrated barcodes. Simpson’s
work is inspired by the arts and crafts movement, 50s advertising and folk art.
At 14, his main
influences towards the comic industry was through his uncle working for DC
Thompson. Steve Thompson would work there drawing the boxes around the cartoons
produced in the comic books. In 1990, Steve Simpson moved from Manchester to
Dublin.
His career started
with animation and working for comic books. At the age of 26, Steve Simpson
worked as an art director for Budgie the Little Helicopter with Fred Wolf Film.
He later on got recruited to produce cartoons for Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. However,
he felt his style was restricted working as an art director; the cartoons had
to look a certain way. Steve Simpson later on worked for Danger Mouse, Count
Duckula, and Cosgrove Hall.
Simpson later on worked
in the illustration industry as he felt the animation/ comic book industry did
not fit his style of working. With branding briefs, Steve Simpson works in an
illustrative style to add personality, character, and liveliness. His style
doesn’t entail a certain requirement of looking tidy, and staying in a set
grid. The work suggests a sense of whimsical, fun as well as creating something
contemporary, current, trendy and fitting to a certain age group to fit the
clients purpose. Due to this, Steve Simpson work is more had-crafted through
drawing out fonts and illustrations. He originally works through sketchbooks
and then later on works with software to fit the project briefs requirements.
Illustration label
work produced by Steve Simpson, for the company Inferno, for their chilli sauce
products. These labels have successfully won awards at The society of
Illustrators (New York), Association of Illustrators (United Kingdom), Applied
Arts (Canada) and finally achieved bronze bell at the Institute of Creative
Advertising and Design (Ireland).
Steve Simpson worked
for a holiday promotional campaign for Unreal Candy. The project entailed
packaging design, social media, promotion and travel. The first task was to
design Candy Andy. Simpson created masks to add characteristics and personality
towards the brand.
Social Media took
apart of the campaign when Tom Brady dressed up as ‘Candy Andy’, the video was
released, within 24 hours the video gained 1.5 billion viewers.
The company also had
190 feet tall digital screen in Times Square for which they created 30 second
animated loop.
They
then visited Mexico, The Panteón Civil de Dolores, the
largest cemetery in Mexico with over 1,000,000 interments to fit
their campaign.

The Hobbit video game cinematic.
Look development and UI
IKEA latest campaign 'Come Home to play' encourages adults to learn from childish enthusiasm. MPC Studios collaborated with Strange Beast Productions. MPC Studios developed DMP and VFX elements that are incorporated in the film. VFX style included the aspect of drawing; most of the scenery, including the clouds, rocks, and trees, were all hand drawn. MPC Studios keep a stylistic consistency to level with Daren's art direction of keeping the outcome clear and thoughtful.
Marta Veludo
Marta Veludo is a graphic designer in Amsterdam,
Netherlands. Marta Veludo
has lived in Augsberg, Germany, studied and worked in Barcelona. Veludo’s
style explores playful patterns through printed matter, clothing, and motion
graphics. The multimedia approach has created confusion of what her practise is
about. The designer feels she was forced to specialise.
However due to the individuality, clients admire her pale
brushstrokes, colourful and confetti like patterns. This style infuses a
graphic rhythm. Veludo has worked with Spanish fashion designer, Krizia
Robustella to design prints for a new collection. The collection was inspired by
80’s skiwear and winter vacations in Switzerland. The graphic interpretation
was of mountains of the valley which was translated through bright colours,
modular shapes, and grids.
Paris Graphic Design Festival
Poster Design commissioned by Frenchfourch for Paris Graphic Design Festival 2017 under the theme creative sports. Was displayed in JCDecaux billboards, around Paris and London & exhibited at Museum of Les Arts Decoratifs.
Reebok Creative Hub celebrates the 25 years of Ventilator. Marta
& Ricky were commissioned by Soon in Tokyo to create 4 intros for 4 videos
done by CANADA, Nacho Alegre, Tomas Pena & David Alonso Mendez.
Offset helped me understand the different aspect to Art and
Design. Studio Laucke Sieben helped me initiate concept for the first module.
The typography inspired by military type related to the theme of embattle. Steve
Simpson incorporated an illustrative skill which encouraged me to apply my
drawing skills towards my work. The moving brands was more of an eye opener, as
the concept was clever and unique. The use of the studio using 3D skills
reminded me of previous work from the Extended Diploma course. Perhaps in the
future I could apply the technique of 3D skills. Ryan Jefferson Hays introduced film making.
This could be a technique where I record information for research process. The
structure of designing story boards which will plan out as a film. Overall,
Marta Veludo is a main inspiration as she explores multimedia which relates to
my style. To develop my practise further, I will introduce multimedia and apply
digital skills onto this.
