Task 04 and Task 05

Brief: To design branding for an emerging artist.

Serpentwithfeet is an emerging artist of 2017. The artist has a creative output to classical music. The singer includes pain, empathy, emotion, feeling towards his music. The artists embraces himself through creativity of how he presents himself. The colours he wears are red and blue. The red is to establish power and danger, emotion and blue perhaps echoes his previous feeling of feeling trapped, alone, isolated. The message the artist is addressing is freedom; feel free to embrace yourself.

Josiah Wise is an artist known as Serpentwithfeet. The artist has two tattoos that spell out the words “Heaven” and “Suicide”. Wise makes music that is dark and sift and rich. His voice is classically trained; developed from years of singing in the Maryland State Boys Choir and studying vocal technique at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts, this is where he developed a genre between gospel and R&B. Wise introduces music where he was introduced through Churches, in Baltimore, where he grew up. In early 2010, he self-released a handful of now-deleted tracks that focus on sex, death, and darker undertones of spiritually. However, the new release of Blisters is more personal.

Whiles growing up, Josiah Wise found it hard expressing himself and his sexuality as he was brought up with a strict upbringing. The writer was brought up with gospel singing however he wanted to outbreak this tradition through R&B. Wise inspirations are Faith Evans and Brandy.

“All the colors exist, so why not experience them?” - Josiah Wise

The definition of Serpent: means snake, it is one of the oldest mythological symbols.

Perhaps Wise has named himself due to the religious interpretation, of the devil

The problem with the brand name is it is too complicated and to long. The idea and concept, in my opinion, does not fit the dynamic and message of tranquility, freedom. Due to his identity being the strong, the branding has to fit the individual.
The idea behind the artist viewing himself as evil and bad perhaps establishes a sense of a lack confidence, where emerging artist struggle with finding their own individual self.

However, Josiah Wise explains his idea behind 'Serpentwithfeet'. The idea is to reflect the element of King copra.

Frank Ocean

Why is Frank Ocean so famous?

Besides his extraordinary talent, the artist explored the theme of sexuality which perhaps was not approached in the R&B industry. The use of the artist exploring this genre, perhaps the audience relate to this issue. This backs up Storey (2012) theory on Americanisation. Americanisation is the process of popular culture being developed through cultural historical events taken place such as gay rights.

Frank Ocean inspiration came from an image of a child with her hand covering her face. A seatbelt secured her across her torso, riding up her neck and a massive mop of blonde hair stayed swept behind her ear. Her eyes were clear and calm however not blank. Frank Ocean used this information and put himself into that situation. Frank Ocean used the idea of Claustrophobia through the strength of the seatbelt, the movement between the body and seatbelt which presses on the organ.

This concept stemmed from Frank Ocean’s obsession with cars. Ocean uses everyday actions, which perhaps influences our behaviour, of commuting through cars. Ocean questions this obsession, perhaps is it a subconscious straight boy fantasy.

Miguel

The designer wanted to created something seductive and emphasise the sexual atmosphere. This was conveys through the inspiration from Lava. Miguel wanted the album the require a wide range of colour.

Bjork

Bjork inspiration, painting by surrealistic painter, Leonora Carrington.

Bjork is an Icelandic singer, songwriter, producer, and actress. Her musical style has developed into an electric genre mixed with pop, classical, hip-hop styles. She was initially known as a lead singer of alternative rock band ‘The Sugarcubes’, where in 1987 produced the hit ‘Birthday’ where this became a favourite song among music critics. Bjork embarked a solo career in 1993.

Bjork style is innovative and wild, her inspirations are very broad and diverse. For instance, some inspiration comes from Leonora Carrington a surrealistic painter. Another example is experimental rap of California’s Death Grips. She is also a fan of harbours, Pakistani Sufi singer Abida Parveen, and coconut water.

Serpentwithfeet inspiration is through artist Brandy as well as working with his feeling and emotion. I could perhaps adapt this idea and concept with designing. Creating something subjective and emotional.

A piece of Graphics I have found for Serpentwithfeet branding.

I could adapt more of a drawing quality to represent freshness and originality.

The drawing could reflect his tattoos and accessories of how he explores himself. I could also include the lyrics within his material and apply this onto his work.

Cornel West (2009) discusses how genres are being developed through past and present music. Serpentwithfeet inspiration comes through artist Brandy where he has mixed Brnady's style with classical and electric music to achieve his own voice.

Emerging artists which have developed recognition.

She came 4th, with Ray BLK as the winner. FACT Mag also named Smith as one of their 10 Pop and R&B artists to watch in 2017.

Frank Oceans Branding

Radium Pesko

Radium Pesko worked with Franks Ocean’s branding for, Boys Don’t Cry. The hand distorted sans serif typeface was made by scanning the original copy on a scanner. The distortion was reated by moving the original typography while the lamp is moving past.

Contextual Research behind the design

Wade Guyton

Wade Guyton is a post conceptual American artist who creates digital paintings on canvas using scanners and digital inkjet technology.

The process of cutting up typefaces could address obscurity. The overlaying creates a fulfilled aspect. This could be adapted to address presence and confidence.

Bob Cobbing

Bob Cobbing is a visual concrete poet. Concrete art could be a technique explored within the design process.

This technique could be adapted when exploring the character's personality and perhaps objects which reflect Josiah Wise.

Franks Ocean's designs for "Endless"

This process will help my practise develop as it applies ideas and concept to do with the contextual meaning of the word 'Endless'. The technique explored are used by many digital programmes. I could perhaps explore various techniques in my thumbnail process.

Joe Perez

Joe Perez is a creative director and graphic artist based in Providence, Rhode Island. He has worked with various artist such as Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Miguel and many more. Perez designed Miguel branding logo: art direction by Jenna Marsh, design by Haris Fazlani, and Isha Walia.

The typeface includes sharp angles relating to black lettering. The typeface is a modern approach towards black lettering. The Italic approach creates a sense of movement and speed relating to Miguel's personality and music. This will help my practise as I can modify existing typefaces and manipulate them to create a memorable logo.
