Task 06: Thumbnails sketches

The process began by brainstorming a wide range of ideas:

The first idea was to incorporate cryptic typefaces to reflect Serpentwithfeet's feelings and emotion, of him feeling confused in his pass. The mirrored effect reflects the idea of past and present; how he perceives himself now. This will create the audience to feel more reassured and empathise.

Exploring this idea further by using different cryptic alphabets which I have collected. I adapted the designs into the typeface.

However the problem with these is they needed more individuality and clarity. Perhaps the concept doesn't fit in with the context of the words.

The typeface is influenced through black lettering. The concept of black lettering relates to the contextual referencing of the religious heritage Serpentwithfeet is portraying. This relates to the time period of the serpent being portrayed as the devil in the religious context. Blacklettering was one of the first typefaces invented addressing this new beginning. The characteristics of black lettering reflects power, strength, sharpness, confidence which relates to Serpentwithfeet persona. The bottom design is too overcomplicated, this could cause confusing and perhaps rejection in popular culture. The design was influenced through tattoo art, and inspiration from the artist.

Exploring medium which ensures a more defined approached. To develop this further I could consider colour incorporate Serpentwithfeets theory on colour.

Exploring different medium of inks and a nib to create type. To develop this further I could adapt candle wax to incorporate the theme of religion from Serpentwithfeet's heritage. This could be developed by exploring different colours which are relevant to the identity of Serpentwithfeet. The lines were influenced by tribal art, as this is one of Serpentwithfeet's inspiration.

Incorporating lines and circles from Serpentwithfeet's face art. I have adapted this onto the typeface to reflect a cryptic feel.

To create a logo for branding, focusing on a letterform which signifies the shape of a serpent. The S includes a pattern from the Serpent's skin. To develop this further, I could adapt this style to all the letters.

I then explored with circus type, and culture. The reasoning is the idea of the circus being once popular, and was perceived as high culture. Also the words 'Seprentwithfeet' create a circus feel through the joyful nature within the words.

Experimentation with illustration influenced by Drake's Album, and Barthes theory on a role model.

To develop this further, I could apply colour and other elements around to create an Album cover design.

Refining my drawing skills.

The word Heaven could be applied in wax crayon to create it to stand out more. The design could be refined on illustrator. The drawing skills still needs to be refined to establish the identity of Serpentwithfeet.

With this illustration, there is more style which signifies Serpentwithfeet image and persona. The drawing signifies presence and power. This could be developed by applying watercolour and then applying information to form a poster. So the design has a function.

To develop the thumbnails further, I wanted to design ideas for an album cover. The deigns are influenced through Serpentwithfeet features as this will create something more memorable.

I had the idea on focusing on pink beards as this what creates Serpentwithfeet more individual and innovative. This could be created in a logo for his identity and branding.

Developing this idea further however applying type over where the eyes would be placed. The word 'heaven' could be the title of the first album to reflect on Serpentwithfeet's tattoo. The pattern from Serpentwithfeet acts out as a halo reflecting the concept of religion.

I have played with composition layout by arranging the features in a centred column grid layout. This creates simplicity however do all the elements connect together. This is least successful as it may be hard to communicate what it is. A miscommunication could be portrayed from the audience.

The typeface includes the cryptic code as it creates a modern aspect through the sanskrit typeface, perhaps helvetica, futura or univers. I have applied context through a serpents tail. Perhaps this element could be adapted as a pattern relating to tribal art. To develop this further, I could create backgrounds through the serpent's skin pattern.
