Exploring a broad range of visual communication from
different cultures, contexts and epochs. The first communication originated
from Cave art where they used images to communicate a certain phrase.

Cy Twombly (2001) Lepanto, Panel 8 of 12
The American painter created a large narrative cycle
dedicated to the famous naval battle which took place in Gulf of Lepanto on the
7th of October 1571, between the Ottoman Turks and the so-called “Holy
League”, a Christian coalition formed by Spain, Venice and the Papacy.
This series represents the historical importance of a large
narrative cycle of paintings. Twombly introduces the theme of an unbroken
continuity. Twobly also introduces a pictorial language of his own. The series
of paintings include 12 canvases, where the artist has incorporated verses by renowned
poets.
Richard Long (1989) ‘Red Earth Circle’
Richard Long describes his art as a mobility, lightness and
freedom. Long uses acts of walking and marking about places, locality, time,
distance, and measurements. The art uses raw materials to signify the music in
stones, paths. Richard Long exhibited his work in Tate Britain, titled Heaven and
Earth
The pieces include the concept of slat circles, straight
lines using raw materials, wall markings made from mud from River Avon, as well
as photographic information to signify the wanders of the earth.
The circles made in the environment include the idea of visibility
and invisibility. The use of the circle being unknown was it an intentional
mark. Richard
Long walks in circles until his imprint is left on the earth or the grass:
sometimes he walks back and forth in a straight line to the same end. Other
signature pieces are made by arranging stones in a circle or a straight line,
echoing other more ancient rites and rituals, the mysterious traces left by our
ancestors.
The work conveys the idea of echoes. This reflects
the context behind the work of early migration in Africa, this echoing the
history of mankind and the movement around the world.
The concept of
walking reflects different traditions of landscape walkers, the walking poets,
the pilgrim, it is also possible to walk in new ways.
The Red Earth is created out of mud and sand, using natural materials to convey the idea of movement and travel.
Benjamin (1936)The Work of Arts in the Age in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.'
This piece is used for imagery to convey a magical scenery, a place where people can relax and share a moment through the scenery. The concepts entail eternal values and mystery within the
piece.
The works within The Papal Basilica reflects communication through a religious aspect.
The Papal Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is the mother
church of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor Conventional in Assisi, a
town of Umbria region in central Italy, where St Francis was born and died. The
basilica is one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy.
The basilica begun in 1228, where it was built on a hill and
was known as two separate churches: Upper Church and Lower Church. The interior
design of the upper church is an example of Gothic style in Italy. Both
churches are covered with paintings by medieval painters such as: Cimanue,
Giotto, Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Pietro Cavallini. The range of
painters demonstrate Italian art in this period.
The Upper Basilica consists of a bright and spacious
interior. The interior includes a cross-vaulted ceiling bordered with pattern
of crosses and leaves. The four ribbed vaults are decorated by alternately with
golden stars on a blue background and paintings. This architecture is described
as airy, light, gothic architecture which displays French influences even
though the style is individual and unique.
The paintings are scenes from various events; from the life
of Isaac Master, work by Giotto (1290-95). The stained-glass windows were first
decorative elements to be completed in the Church.
Visual Communication has impacted famous paintings and commercialised them to fit into popular culture. This is done through the reproduction of the paintings to gain money towards the economy.
Banksy has played with this idea by applying humour. The context of Mona Lisa being famous plays the idea of a role model within popular culture. The idea of sampling how modern day impacts reproduction. Banksy has combined famous, known events in history and created an image which visually communicates humour. It also explored the audience being more ope-minded and accepted.

On July 1, 1950s
Hans Namuth rented a house for the summer in Water Mill, Long Island. Namuth
had seen Pollock’s work at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York City in November
1950. Namuth’s first impressions of the painter was negative, however Harper
Bazaar art director, Alexey Brodovitch, encouraged Namuth to work with Pollock.
Taking this on board, Namuth decided to work with Pollock in his studio. Over
the summer period, Namuth took five hundred photographs of Pollock paintings.
The photographs entailed personality, characteristics and introduced the
ideology of dance and movement through the process of Pollock’s work ethic. The
visual communication is how Pollock expresses himself through this language,
the idea of Pollock creating his own language through expression.
This moved Namuth’s
career as a photographer, as he would explore people’s characteristics through
photography to establish a language. These photographs engage the audience by
creating a larger interpretation and captivate the audience creativity.
In Pollock’s
paintings, the picture reveal the technique of the painter. The process of the
paint appearing like it has been poured when in fact is was applied with turkey
basters, which creates the envisions that the artists included an energetic dance
to convey emotion.
The canvas includes thin black line; this
shows the artist has released a pulse of paint to imitate feeling through
process. Therefore, Pollock’s technique in Echo,
merges drawing and painting in the movement of his engagement with the canvas.
This work relates
back to Pollock’s early work shown in sketchbooks. It also could reveal his competitive
feeling towards Picasso during that time period. As the painting Echo includes similarities towards
Picasso’s painting, Girls.
American Pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein painted Look Mickey in 1961, which set the tone
of his career. This use of primary colours introduces a detached, deadpan style
during Abstract Expression. Lichtenstein uses materials from advertisement,
comics, to introduce commercial arts.
Vladimirski (1949) 'Roses for Stalin' this painting was based in Russia, where the painter communicates the idea of an Everyday man.
Socialist Realism is a style of realistic art that was developed
in the Soviet Union and became a dominant style in that country.
Political context which has been used to commercialise peoples perspectives as well as creating biased images.
Creating art which reflects the audience's attitudes and opinions, which influences humour within the modern day.
Introducing characterchers a way of mocking the political industry to perhaps fit in with societies opinions on the hierarchy.
Posters created by famous leaders within historical events. This introduces the process of visual communication being influenced by leaders.
During American involvement in World War II
(1941-45) propaganda was produced to increase support for the war.
