Initial Ideas and
thoughts
Creating a brand with my name as it is different and
unique
Different spelling for my name
For the brand was going to include the spelling of NYLA
Theme will have to be short and catchy
Creating something simple
Perhaps include meaning and an idea which leads to that
Creating it more hands on more of a drawing aspect
Apply Photoshop and Illustrator skills which I have learnt
of the course
I especially like drawing Peacocks as that relates to my
cultural heritage
Explore henna tattoo designs as this reflects my cultural
identity
My favourite colour is pink so I could incorporate this
I will apply contemporary type to create more of a mature
approach as Pink can perhaps look very cliché
NYLA Studios
Ink backgrounds
Abstract approach with ink influenced from the wayfinding
projects
Draw onto Excel- enjoyed this technique in the Object
project
A collection of research from various designers.
Researching into designs from Brands and Identities
The piece includes the combination of minimalism and photography. Contextual meaning of hair which helps the logo stand out. WAD magazine, which stands for We are different, is a magazine about fashion and urban cultures published in English, French and Spanish.
The magazine includes new trends, brand recommendation, articles about photographers, and graphic designers. The magazine also includes illustrations.
The magazine was created by Bruno Colin and Brice Compagon.
The name shows an international understanding which creates the magazine to be easy to interpret. The name is simple and unique which makes it easy to remember and innovative.
A piece of branding and identity. The designer has used an adjective and payed with the word why using quotes which intrigue the audience in. It also makes the audience feel positive which will attract them again. The typeface is clear and contemporary. The tones address hierarchy to make the logo stand out. This is relevant towards developing my practise as it shows a simplified approach to branding.
Andre Britz
Andre Britz works on various fields of communication, specialised in Graphic design, web design, interactive installation, and illustration. Since 2004, Andre Britz has worked with companies such as Converse, Porsche, Vodafone, Elastique and many more.
Andre Britz was one of the founders of Britzpetermann, a well known studio for Design and Code. In 2014, Andre Britz started running his own studio.
The piece is an abstract approach of combining type with collage. This piece is relevant towards my research as I could perhaps incorporate collage and simplify letterforms to form shapes. This could perhaps be for my logo design.
I have included this into the research as the background is eye catching and unique. This relates to the way finding work I created. I could adapt a similar process to produce a background which is original and unique.
Random Ideas
Create a Bold typeface playing with kerning, using a San
serif typeface such as Futura or Helvetica.
Typeface in Black then printed onto coloured paper.
Apply the idea of layering printing onto acetate or tracing
paper which overlap a coloured paper with font on. These pages could be sewn
together. Could explore with threads and create the idea of a ‘messy’ business card.
Apply florescent quality by printing onto fluorescent paper.
Will this be too distracting and overcomplicated?
Could use multi media of ink and explore abstraction through
techniques gained from wayfinding project.
The business card could be laid out as a brochure however
printed onto tracing paper so it appears as one concept.
Could adapt the element of a peacock as this animal is an
Indian animal which represents y cultural heritage
Apply design influenced by henna.
Could apply Opacity when layering each section on Photoshop.
Explore Serif typefaces as this is more feminine and
associates class and sophistication.
Explore cut up typefaces perhaps just using vertical lines
within the brand name. Will this make the type readable?
Creating a name for the brand
The Brand name was between:
Nyla
Nyla Studios
Nylartist
The meaning of the name “Nyla” is: “Cloud or champion”. Additional information: Nila or Nyla is also the name of an Egyptian Princess. The name was influenced by the River Nile.
In historical reference Nyla was the sister of the Queen of Egypt Cleopatra.
The definition of the Arabic name Naaila means a winner, a successor, someone who is determined and ambitious, a rare talent.
In typography, a slab serif (also called mechanistic, square serif, antique or Egyptian) typeface is a type of serif typefacecharacterized by thick, block-like serifs.
Researching into the Egyptian culture influenced by the Egyptian princess which my name symbolises
Symbols for Egypt
Symbols in Egypt are easily recognisable to this modern day.
The were found in tombs, temples, and in papyrus manuscripts for the ancient
Egyptians. Each symbol includes meaning.
Pyramids were built as royal tombs within Ancient Egypt. The
spinx was a mythical creature created from large stone statues which would
include a body and a head of a lion, this was built by ancient Egyptians.
Hieroglyphics consists of a writing system, developed in ancient Egypt, that
use picture symbols to convey concepts and ideas.
Animal headed Gods
The ancient Egyptians did not usually worship animals, these
symbols were used as a recognition aid and a device to visually convey the powers,
identity and attributes of the gods.
The Ankh was a sacred icon depicted in royal funerary scenes
reinforcing the close connection between the pharaohs and the gods.
The eye was believed to have magical powers, a symbol of
royal power, protection and good health.
Image of Princess Nyla
Other artists interpretation of Egyptian princesses.
A vision of Cleopatra. Egyptian princess where very decorative and glamourous. I could use the shapes to create a sense of structure within my design work.
Symbols was a way of how Egyptians use to communicate. I could adapt imagery into the identity branding influenced through this process.
Royal Pyramids from Egypt. Looking at the environment for inspirations. Colours which stand out in the Egypt culture is Gold and blue.
Manuscripts from Ancient Egypt. To develop this into my practise I could perhaps adapt this into type to create a logo.
Researching into Animals which originate from India and Africa as this is where I originate from
Great Windmill swallowtail Butterfly
This species originate in North East India. To develop the project further I could perhaps use the colours from these species and create a colour theme. I could also apply pattern perhaps through henna tattoos.
Design Process
Ive chosen butterflies as they are personal to me as an individual. Therefore I researched into butterflies in India. This butterfly is called the Great Windmill swallowtail butterfly. It is found in North East India.
To incorporate this into design, I used Pantone and created colour swatches from this picture.
I then explored colour swatches using Egyptian research pictures.
I developed this further by designer Business cards
I explored Serif typeface as this is known as an Egyptian typeface. The colours create a sophisticated, elegant approach.
I then reversed the design colours to create a positive and negative samples. This wasn't as successful as it looks to cliche.
This sample was influenced by Egyptians colours.
Exploring composition layouts with work I have achieved on the course so far. In my opinion, there is no connection between the two elements therefore it lacked concept.
The concept behind this design is researching into saved animals. As drawing is personal to me I have developed this further by applying Image trace onto Illustrator.
This example is a piece I created which I have developed on photoshop to show how I work as an artist.
The feedback from the critique after the presentations was there was a lack on concept. Therefore to refine this idea I will think of more of a design and concept to fit the brand name for the future.
