A lot of these ideas were used for commercial purposes for TV advertising in 1989.

Frank Olinksy was a young graphic designer who worked with Fred Seibert to develop the logo design. The design was created by a bold San Serif outlined 'M'. Olinksy critiqued the logo by suggesting a more graffiti effect applied towards the logo. Experiemtns were taken place using acetate and spray paint of the letters 'TV' applied overtop.

These concepts were sent of to Manhattan designs for refinement. The logo was developed through corporate gloss and designs.

Animations were produced through these experiments including concepts of the 80s culture. The designs included Pop art culture to suggest n urban, edgy, glamourous aesthetic.

Mtv Logo

The Mtv logo includes more innovatively with visual design. The design aesthetic is more illustrative compared to the American Apparel logo. The MTV logo includes dynamic effect through the 3d effect applied onto the ‘M’. This represents the aesthetic of a television to create that correlation, as Television were a lot thicker in the 80s. The graffiti font of the letters ‘TV’ introduces the element of creativity which represents music and art culture. The typography is a san serif font which includes more of a narrow proportion contrasted to the American apparel logo. This perhaps suggest how typography has changed overtime of what was seen as contemporary. This aesthetic of narrow typeface could be applied when create imagery ideas for the final logo.

The original logos are in negatives to reflect the dimension of the logo. This was then developed further by applying contextual illustrative approach towards the logo which was later on used for visual GIFs and animations. This idea could be adapted when developing the final logo. The experiments could be applied within the logo design to create a final animation.

The illustrations of the development of the MTV logo create a visual which is eye-catching and innovative. The imagery relates to context as the patterns are related to the 80s cultures. They have also adapted a retro perspective within the animation by incorporate real objects such as food. This could be applied when developing the final brand. The imagery include scenery from traditional California which was renown in the 1980s. This could be an idea by exploring surroundings in 80s America and adapted that into the imagery.

American Apparel

North America clothing manufacturer based in Los Angeles, California. Founded by Canadian Business man Dov Charney in 1989. American Apparel vision of the brand is to establish heritage of the American dream.

The business idea stemmed by Charney designing T-shirts in his dorm room and selling them on campas. This idea turned into one of America's largest companies which included a reputation due to it's controversial advertisement.

The American Apparel logo was designed using the font Helvetica Black with more tight spacing.

The American Apparel aesthetics was influenced by the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics. American Apparel featured in Daze magazine; advertise the aesthetic of hip culture and youth. American Apparel relied on bold advertising as a tool to raise its profile. The ads have played a significant role of shaping its identity. Suggestive adds became attention grabbing. The campaigns explored feminine aesthetics however this received backlash and was controversial. The brand became well known for its racy-ads and questionable campaigns than its ethical manufacturing processes.

With the American Apparel logo, this is more graphical compared to the MTV logo. The use of Helvetica is explored with a tighter kerning. This is produced digitally. The same typeface is sued through out advertisement. Advertisement is a key factor through publication. However more contemporary content is applied. Perhaps applying a digital aesthetic onto traditional processes is more intriguing to todays audience. Compositions layouts are explored digitally which could also be produced for user experience such as Apps, blogs, websites.

Exploring modern traditional graphic design

Publications

The typography is developed further by altering letters individually on Illustrator. This technique could be applied when exploring possible routes in logo design. The composition layouts explores colour, repetition, saturation. This will be taken into consideration when exploring layouts.

Hey Girl- Issue 003

The typeface is bubbly and curvy to reflect the femininity. This type could be applied when developing the logo as the san serif was popularly used within 80s designs.

Exploring compositions through type and image. The use of the darker background and neon font reflects an 80s aesthetic. This idea could be applied when exploring possible ideas.

'Hey girl' is a new generation in media which highlights the female talent in the creative industry, positive, empowering, collaborative, ideas, a voice for love. The publication moves may from the superficial, and focuses on the importance of  experience through the idea of 'living life'. The magazine purpose is to inspire the reader.

The magazine includes 80s aesthetics, through Photoshop techniques such as gradient blur effect, and saturated images being applied. The use of collage creates a concept of breaking the rules which relates to the concept of Psychedelic nature. The colour yellow contrast well with the pastel tones in the background. Perhaps yellow could be a colour which is used to emphasise a more dated effect.

Target market is a key factor as they focus on a female market. This is relevant towards my company development. The typeface creates a feminine aesthetic through the wholes in the B shaping as a love heart, this introduces a symbolic meaning which relates to the colour pink. The curved edges create a serif approach which relates to fashion type. The chunky, bold type creates a sense of freedom, the use of higher case suggests an empowering effect. The tight kerning creates a fresh more contemporary approach, which also addresses acceptance and a community.

Pia Mia 'The Gift 2' album design

This example identifies a brand which is inspired by 80s but applied a more contemporary approach through the neon aesthetic. The use of the italics creates a contextual meaning but also creating a contemporary approach through the san serif type. The use of the outline creates innovative aesthetic, and creativity is applied through colour. Perhaps exploring graphical approaches then applying a creative approach through colour choice. This design is more minimalistic and simple contrasted the the MTV logo design. However compared to the other designs this perhaps is seen as generic and already achieved. It lacks innovation contrasted to the MTV logo.

The Pia Mia second logo design is more complex however less eye-catching due to the size. It relates to Diner type however the medium used for the type suggests other wise. Perhaps this could lead to creating type through different mediums could be a possible route

The album, type and photography colour palette was influenced through the 80s culture.

The album design was by graphic design student Falus Designs.

The typeface exam includes an italic diagonal aesthetic which relates to sports typography within the 80s culture. The outline creates a  more contemporary approach. However the use on neon lights represents a modern media where they have developed the 80s culture further to create a more fresher dynamic.

Pia Mia was chosen to be fashion director for Madonna's material girl clothing line.

She later on worked with Missguided, where she launched her fashion line. This was advertised onto the misguided blog, exploring digital advertisement.

Digital publication however based in a blog layout.

Use of this composition uses hight in composition to relate to the context of minimal text. Perhaps a minimal approach will adapt a more contemporary approach.

Layering type creates the aesthetic of rebellion and breaking the rules.

The type relates to the images in a conceptual approach. Perhaps 80s slogans could be adapted when exploring design ideas.

The use of this is to explore composition layouts. The layouts are clear and simple which create a better communication platform. Perhaps the use of imagery in exploring scale and size emphasise the message more. The use of pictograms create a more fresh approach. Perhaps this could be developed further in my designs by applying digital illustrations which relates to the digital market.
