Self Branding Logo

Base the design on Migration, relate personal identity of my cultural heritage.

Researching into Migration through a political aspect, exploring war aspect.

Military Uniform

*A military uniform is the standardised dress worn by members in the armed force and paramilitaries of various nations.

*A paramilitary is a semi-militarized force whose organizational structure, tactic, training, subculture, and function are similar to those of a professional military, but which is not included as part of a state’s formal armed force.

*Military dress and military styles have gone through great changes over the centuries from colourful and elaborate to extremely utilitarian.

*Utilitarian- military camouflage (Army print)

*Military uniforms in the form of standardised and distinctive dress, intended for identification and display, are typically a sign of organised military forces equipped by a central authority.

Military Camouflage

*Military camouflage is the use of camouflage by a military force to protect personnel and equipment from observation by enemy forces.

*This means applying colour and materials to military equipment of all kinds, including: vehicles, ships, aircraft, gun, positions, and battledress. This is to conceal it from observation (Crypsis), or make it appear as something else (mimicry).

Battledress

*Battledress is a type of uniform used as combat uniforms as opposed to dress uniforms/ formal uniform worn at parades and functions.

*American English (Western) the term fatigues are used originally being a term for soldiers work uniforms.

*The battledress is generally camouflaged, either in monochrome such as a shade of green or brown to approximate the background, or in a disruptive pattern.

*the battledress is usually made from cotton and to more loose and comfortable cut.

*British forces in India in the mid 19thcentury was the first to use drab cotton uniforms for battle; they were first worn by the Corps of Guides in 1848 where the colour of drab light-brown uniform was called Khaki by Indian troops.

Corps of Guides (India)

*The Corps of Guides was a regiment of the British Indian Army which served on the North West Frontier.

Regiment- organize according to a strict system/ pattern. Order, control, manage.

Definition: a permanent unit of an army typically commanded by a lieutenant colonel and divided into several companies, squadrons, or batteries and often into two battalions.

Colour Palette

Contextual Research

The Life of Pablo by Kanye West. The inspiration includes army print, applying gold foil type. The use of this allows the type to stand out and also emphasise the idea of hierarchy and power. Perhaps the experimentation of foil print could be adapted when considering self branding.

Boy London is a clothes street wear clothes company. The San serif typeface is bold and intimidating. The use of an illustrative eagle relates to the idea of battle and military symbols of power and strength. Perhaps the idea of wings could be adapted when considering the designs.

Ivy Park is a clothing range created by Beyonce. The typeface is bold and signifies strength. The use of the layout is associated with the visuals of a crown.

Considering when designing, the use of black lettering, or explore a san serif typeface.

Initial Ideas

Creating visual background military print to relate to the theme. This design is least effective as it looks to cliche and not as unique compared to the other designs. The design is already out there.

The outline type relates to stencil type which is used in the military. The colours work effectively, however perhaps does not relate to my personality.

These designs are more successful as the design looks unique and looks like a logo. The use of the stars and arrows relates to the aesthetic of the military concept. To develop the designs further explore colours which work together.

Development

Feedback

*Consider a visual aesthetic for the logo
*perhaps incorporate colour which relates to your character and the aspect of fashion.
*Consider size and what you will create, how will it function?

The response to the feedback was to create business cards for the self branding. I will have to conciser size and scale. Colour ways will be explored looking at it on a more fashion aspect. I will consider visual logo which will relate to my cultural heritage.

The meaning of the logo relates to coconut palm trees originating from Egypt as Nyla is an Egyptian name. The use of the stem being in military coding which means Nyla. The use of the gradient fill relates to the idea of the sunset. The arabic is taken from the Poet Nizar Qabanni, a poet from the Middle East. To develop this design further, perhaps include Arabic which means Nyla Designs. The visuals of the wings is taken to resemble strength. During the critique it was stated to loose the wigs, however I feel this makes the design more unique.

Initial Ideas For the Presentation

The initial ideas, shows the concept of East meets West, the arabic is taken from poems by Nizar Qabanni, a Middle Eastern poet.  The concept includes the idea of people feeling puzzled with their identity. The use of Military coding is applied which means the models name.

Feedback Front the Presentation

The use incorporating the East and the West is interesting and makes the deigns unique. Perhaps in the presentation focus on you as a designer as a whole to show all your diversity within design as the presentation focused on my interest of editorial. The presentation should outline who I am as a designer, but exploring the diversity of my work.
