Reflective practise
The discussion within the third essay explored the concepts
within visual literacy. Visual Literacy
explores many themes within the practical process, such as,
semantics, metonym and metaphor. This was discussed to show how graphic design
is produced to form branding. Branding is the signifier which signifies quality
innovation, creativity and design.
The theories discussed were: mass culture, Americanisation,
mythology, trends, and sampling. William (1976) discusses how in the modern-day
society has changed into mass culture, where people have become more open-
minded and individual rather than applying themselves in a set group. Secondly,
Storey (2012) theory on Americanisation explores the concept of events taking
place which changes people’s views on things, for instance the gay rights
movement. Thirdly Barthes (1915-1980) theory on role models explores the idea
of the audience requiring a set role model. Finally, Cornel West (2009)
discusses the element
of pulling the past and present together form something innovative.
The contextual referencing was followed by a descriptive
format of analysing existing branding, by an artist in the commercial industry.
The XX branding was analysed. This helped develop the practical
process further by
seeing what was accepted in popular culture, and how the design was done
through modern techniques.
The theory helps develop the practise to stay in trend and
fit into the commercial industry. This therefore, reduces decline with in
designs and introduces acceptance.
To improve this project, the writing analysis needs to be
developed, as well as exploring technical
techniques to fit into popular culture.
