Contextual Research
Current galleries and exhibitions follow similar style when presenting. The large space is cleared and stripped down in order to form clarity and space.
This space has been proven to be a calming environment, allowing large groups to appreciate the arts. The intimidation of formality may cause some to act certain, uncomfortable ways.
Due to the fact that exhibitions will be a reflection of students work, it should avoid these tendencies, and create a relaxed, comfortable environment, whilst still maintaining a certain level taste and sophistication.

The Beautiful meme for this year's annual D&AD awards. The meaning and concept behind these designs and animations; they have been designed from a archived materials from the awards from previous years. The subtle approach creates a few individuals to understand the historic and celebratory references to the awards.
The colour has been designed as a brighter colour to emphasise the idea of celebration.
The animations are able to used over media such as online websites, onsite, marketing, and signage material. This could influence the idea process by applying design to other media applications. The image work could be adapted by previous works. The idea of repeating objects into an Animation. The concept of Animation relates to the idea of something contemporary and modern.
OK-RM
This branding was initially designed for a large scale exhibition of contemporary art from Latin America, which was shown in the South London gallery, Guggenheim and UBS. The repeating patterns, shapes, and grids format a continuing theme throughout the branding.
The bright colours contrasts the neutral natural environment which strikes the audiences attention. The design has been influenced by work within the exhibition. This shows a glimpse of the exhibition, what will be showed inside. There is a good use of colour and typography which makes is easier to explore with a wide range of media.
Morag Myerscough and Luke Morgan
The designers have installed a new design for the Pavilion of Birmingham Library, which as completed by Dutch studio Mecanoo. The aim is the challenge people of what the library has to offer. The pavilion is meant to interact, interchangeable, and versatile. The brightly coloured words originate from youth art groups.
Myerscough stated: "We wanted to greet visitors with a smile and a celebration of the word, it encourages conversations and fun."The design has been handcrafted, which gives the idea of adapted handcraft approach to establish tradition.
Exploring the Gallery
The concept is to design a gallery setting, based around the current exhibition space. The design will have to function with what is already required, the design will act as a vocal point which will communicate the relevant message.
At this point, the circle idea would run consistent with the architecture of the gallery space. The circular theme is found on the floor and in a series of circular sculptures hung from walls, there will be repetition flow of shape.
Initial Ideas
Creating Image work influenced by CMYK and circles to imitate the process of screen printing.
Exploration with backgrounds and the pattern shown on the screen. The colours represent the ink going through the small circles on the silk material.
Exploration of producing a logo with type within the circle.
Exploring tonal textures which can fit within type. This acts as a logo. The idea of dots creates the illusion of the the being made out of silk.
Designs inspired by Marta Veludo. The Lines represent confetti to imitate the aspect of celebration. It also represents unity and a community.
Logo designs influenced through layers and circles to adapt a conceptual approach.
Feedback
The feedback given was there were to many bright colours, perhaps simplify the colour palette. Perhaps categories the colour into four sections. Create the ideas to relate to each other, the designs connecting. Investigate Lee Goates work- Central Library about circles. Link Substrate to social. Brake down the circle to symbolise cultural historical events. Incorporate different facts about circles.
Design Development
Braking the Circle : Pattern experimentation
Creating textures influenced through the idea of layering. This is shown through the idea of braking the circle. These designs could be developed further for way finding development.
Exploring Logo Ideas
Adapting the element od typography and circles together. Combining the elements together to produce a logo type. However the feedback given this was to clinical and perhaps portrayed the imagery of particles rather than an art exhibition.
Experimentation developed further by applying the CMYK theme.
The designs were combined and created a composition layout applying all these concepts together. The feedback given was perhaps these designs were to complicated and applying to many ideas into one design.
Creating Digital swatches by applying the concept of layers with CMYK. This introduce the theme of categories. Perhaps these swatches could be adapted into separate sections.
Logo design influenced through cutting up elements. This imitates the concept of screen printing perhaps not working out.
Composition layouts of separating letters to create an interesting structure.
The elements of lines were introduced through the concept of layers. However the circle idea was more successful as it addressed unity and community, people being involved within the circle.
Exploring Typography. As a group we decided to use a San serif type to create a modern approach. The type related to the circle idea. This therefore creates a connection between type and design.
Logotype Development
The composition includes two lines to adapt the idea of layers. However during team meetings, the ines looked unnecessary. Therefore the idea needed developing further. Perhaps this introduced the idea of a frame. However the composition layout was addressed as successful as it conveys the idea of layers and created a simple easy layout which will be easily recognised.
Font: Circular STD
The typeface is bold, clean, and clearly legible, the dashes located above the 'S' and under the 'E' is to represent the physical screen, emphasised by the composition of the word, as a representation of layers.
Chosen Logo
Development for Flyer Designs.
Perhaps including information at the bottom in a smaller type to create more focus on the brand name. The layering of circles were introduced to include all ideas in a simple composition layout.
The process of lines introduces the idea of categories.
The design was developed further through colour. However during feedback the concept was mislead as this created a change and looked like a different brand compared to the original logo.
This design was voted the most successful as it introudced colour, and the concept of a frame. Therefore as a group we decided to develop this design further for our final brand.
Experimentation through layout and composition change. This is least successful as it takes a lot of space and is unnecessary. The composition lacks concept and meaning.
Development work of applying the design onto context.
Creating posters with the substrate design. The poster will include where the venue is and what date it will be on.
Exhibition Poster Development
Further Development
Experimentation with pattern and colour ways for poster designs.
Experimentation with CMYK, combining colours to create a contrast.
Applying a background relating the context of where the event is allocated. The map of Leeds create a complicated approach which may be distracting from the logo itself.
Production
Screen Print Experiments
Experimentation with Kerning and screen printing. The method chosen is to relate to traditional methods. The poster designs will be screen printed for the final outcome. Experimentations explored through different colours and paper. The feedback addressed was the use of acetate isn't durable and may appear unprofessional being used in industry. However to argue this the use of acetate relates to theme of layering.
Wayfinding Development
Repeating pattern to represent the layering concept. These idea were successful and relate to the theme of CMYK. These pictograms could be developed further by applying type in a suited composition. Therefore the type will appear more readable and spaced out. The type could be developed further on these designs as they appear overcomplicated.
This idea was the most successful as it introduces the idea of the arrows influenced through the frame design for the logo. It creates a rhythm and continuous theme.
Wayfinding Ideas
Wayfinding ideas influenced through the CMYK and gradient concept.
Experimentation with arrow heads and categories.
Applying the concept of dots to address community.
The feedback given was to focus more on directions rather than toilet way finding pictograms. Therefore the development with the arrow was more appropriate.
Brochure Development
Exploring methods influenced through the layering concept.
Experimentation applied with acrylic, the medium used for screen printing. These are samples for the title pages within the brochure.
Experimentation will colour to address different categories.
Adapting backgrounds influenced by circles. The handcraft approach relates to traditional methods.
Exploring this idea digitally applying a gradient aspect influenced by previous designs.
Including a continuous theme of the frame and circles.
Categorising each section with different colours influenced by CMYK. The layout is influenced through the design of the logo.
Composition layout using grid methods. This will display each screen print produced.
Developed title pages, to separate each screen print into categories.
Experimentation with Magenta and Yellow to relate to the process of screen printing.
Applying a black background was voted as the most successful, as it created a flow and consistency within the brochure.
Final Mockups chosen as the most successful as it relates to the theme in previous designs.
Other experimentations.
This idea is over complicated and appears to come across different compared to the other design ideas.
The developed title pages are successful in the colour aspect. However the image behind it creates a different theme which may not relate to whole identity branding. Therefore this design was least successful compared to the first one.
