Create a booklet of a range of illustrations- these could be separated into categories. For instance a category of hats.
Create a zine of different characters and disguises. For instance, a hipster character and Indie character.
Create a photomontage of the everyday life of a typical art student, this idea was influenced by DR.ME.
DR.ME
‘It’s nice that’
Manchester-based design studio DR.ME are two
designers, Mark Edwards and Ryan Doyle. The studio created a challenge of
creating a new collage-based piece each day for an entire year. The idea
stemmed from collage artist Paola Giardi.
The task was to create collages each day for
a year. The collages were no bigger than 230mm x 150mm to keep the postage
costs down. Each piece went on sale through Instagram and twitter. The rest
which were unsold were used for an exhibition.
Contextual Research
Gif designed by Freddie Smith a digital artist from London.
The gif shows the background swirling anticlockwise juxtaposed against the
element of spaghetti swirling clockwise. We could adapt this concept onto our
collages to address movement and time change. The spaghetti aspect addresses a
humorous approach towards the gif. To develop our work further, we could adapt
this technique of random elements to apply a humorous approach. The drama is
the statue, we could perhaps look at a focus of a set character to create a
sense of a story.
The Gif shows the focus of hands and movement. We could
adapt the element of hands, creating this as a theme towards our final outcome.
The idea of hands also relates to design and art school. The colour choice is
harmonies and creates a fresh, original approach towards the Gif. The idea of
movement shown through height could create various compositions. This could be
adapted into a layout grid form, by applying height to create new grids.
The Gif was designed by Isabel Chiara. The design includes
context of apply other elements relating to the scenery. To develop our
practise further we could adapt this idea of applying other elements which
relate to the scene. This will therefore include concept and meaning.
The concept of cutting up elements and apply abstract to
complete the composition could be adapted. This could relate to our story
board, of the everyday student feeling confused and overwhelmed. The use of an
overcomplicated nature juxtaposed against simplicity and normality emphasizes
humour.
The Gif was designed by Isabel Chiara. The use of the
abstract approach through the technique of pixilation relates to Excel drawing.
This technique could be adapted by applying illustrations on Excel and adapting
this into a photomontage nature. The concept of contrast creates the colours to
stand out more. To develop our skills further, we could adapt the technique of
taking elements from the human body and apply an abstract approach onto this to
create a composition. The use of the design being complex however laid out in a
concise manner creates clarity. To develop this further we could adapt this
style of layout when designing our photomontages.
Luca Mainini
This Gif shows a hand movement up and down and a body
appearing. This idea could be adapted when a something changes. The concept of
a hand moving up and down could be adapted to address a next scene. The background
of clouds creates dreamful effect. This could be adapted in present day and
night.
The designer has exaggerated features and applied a larger
scale and size. This could be adapted for the charcaters within the story
board. Perhaps the character’s feature could be expanded and the body being
scaled down. This creates the idea of caricatures.
This design includes creativity and a fashion aspect. This
could be adapted when emphasizing what an art student dresses up as. This could
create a stereotypical approach to emphasize humour. The construction of the
design creates a unique quirky approach emphasizing the characteristics of a
typical art student.
