The investigation of Layout
Using a Grid system
Using a Grid system
Grids are used to solve a problem. The problem is what layout is appropriate for certain context. Different grids are used for working with size layouts.
There are many Grids in Graphic Design: Column grid, modular grid, hierarchical grid.
Column Grids are more likely used in Newspapers.
Single column Grids
The rectangular page commonly have margins all the way around.
The square page requires a text block, this eaves the margins varying dimensions.
Symmetrical double spread
Books and magazines are designed as spreads (facing pages). The inside columns are wider which allows room for the spine.
Asymmetrical double spread
The columns on the left side appear wider compared to the right.
Hierartical Grid
Multicolumn Grid
Altering the format by varying widths are staggered within the structure of the grid. This grid is used for important information to sort out the information towards the audience.
Creating a 'hang line'.
A horizontal band divides a text zone from an image zone.
Modular Grid
Includes a consistent horizontal divisions and vertical divisions.
Unit edition
Unit Edition is an independent published practise, the
formation of the company began in 2010 by Tony Brook, Patricia Finegan and
Adrian Shaughnessy. The company produce books for the visual culture industry,
aiming at international audience of designers. Unit edition explore a wide
range of subjects which perhaps are neglected in mainstream publishers.
Action Time Vision Poster
This piece of work relates to my practise as I feel they have adapted a hand craft approach of ripping two pieces of work to create a layout. I could adapt my handcraft style by perhaps working digitally and then applying these qualities to form a final composition layout. I also like the use of colour how they have combined black with pink to create a contrast.
Unit Live Poster
The designer has explored with paint marks and ten adapting digital skills to form a layout. As I have knowledge on multimedia techniques I could adapt this concept of perhaps working with multimedia then applying Photoshop skills of varying the Opacity and adapting layers. The layout of a foreground, middle ground and background is interesting how they have positioned the image slightly below the centre and then applied type over the top to create a foreground aspect. I could adapt shapes to help structure my work in a grid system.
Impact 1.0
The first picture Unit edition has adapting the column grid system however have applied the content in an abstract approach through exploring scale and size. I could incorporate this technique into my practise and by producing the content and then using indesign Photoshop to place in a column format.
The second image uses line to create specification. I could adapt this into my practise by varying colour and exploring colour through this process of layout.
I included the third image in relevance to the sculpture aspect for the design brief of creating a poster about a sculpture image. The sculpture itself is simple however the added tone has created the image to be interesting. The layout of including a box around completes the composition and I could use this for inspiration when creating my final outcome.
David Carson
Design work for Raygun magazine.
Here, David Carson has broken the rules of the grid method. Carson has received mixed reviews from his way of working. Some reviews include the information being unclear and overcrowded. On the other hand people have argued that Carson's work is individual and innovative.
Poster mockup
The sculpture was designed by myself inspired by paper mock ups. I also have knowledge on 3D design from my previous Extended Diploma course. The poster uses Bodoni Typeface to establish a sophistication and hierarchy. The exhibition will be exhibited in the Tate modern museum. The grid method used is the singular grid method.
Feedback
The feedback given was to develop a background perhaps grey which contrasts well with the orange tone. The use of using warm colours relates to the theme of summer when the exhibition will be placed. The typeface for Tate Modern could be the logo instead, to create more identification.
