Concept

The concept for the brief is to create tops based on my own experiences with racism.

The typeface is consistent relating to the typeface used for the Logo Designs, Aktiv Grotesk.

Initial Ideas

Exploring different colours through the primary colours. Introducing Secondary tones of darker shades of pink.

This was originally, "You could be pretty if you weren't black" however during the critique it would be better to change it to "You're pretty for a black girl" as this is more relatable for coloured girls.

The feedback given, was this design wasn't as successful as the others as it was more text heavy. In addition to the audience not being familiar with the racial abuse for "Refugees being called zombies". The idea stems to another concept of Refugees, this topic is unique and not everyone will be familiar with it. Perhaps to develop this idea further is to create a brief designed just on Refugees and the issues which surround this, as this topic is very broad.

The concept of "Arranged Marriage" relates to Edward Said's (1978) theory of being "backwards" in an Islam context. Western Minorities would stereotype this issue of Arrange Marriage with Islam, when in fact arrange marriage is a cultural tradition, nothing to do with religion. This then leads to Said's (1978) theory of knowledge, people will just assume form what they are told.

This relates to the "classic" racial discrimination, during the critique this design was one of the most relatable.

This refers to the traditional outfits from the East.

Format

After Speaking to the Top printers, they suggested they won't be able to get this specific type of Pink, However they would be able to create this design with a Magenta ink as this will be produced through vinyl finish.

Originally, the design was created on a white background, however the feedback giving was to stick to one colour to establish the continuous concept of "one".

Development

It was suggested to Collaborate with Fashion Photography to record these ideas. As well as to show these tops in context.

This picture was taken from myself, developing techniques from Fashion Photography students. The tops are more statement tops rather than design. This was seen as successful, as it conveys the message of racial discrimination. The pink aesthetic was through art direction, inspired by Fashion Photography Student Simone Kanda.
