Ethics and Sustainability?
One of the main issues with this project was the Questionnaire. The Questionnaire could have been worded better as some individuals felt offended when asked what their identity it. Perhaps in future, reach out to a few people and ask if they feel comfortable answering these questions, if they are not happy then they can miss the question out.
Another issue is perhaps the target audience is too focused and can come across as niche. The publication therefore highlights non-Western cultures, this could come across as problematic being displayed in a Western minority.
The tops were based on racism remarks. This was a huge concern, as I thought, many models would not feel comfortable wearing the tops. However, from feedback I was shocked with the amount of positive response. As a lot of ethnic women felt they could relate to the tops, which shocked me.
The tops could have broken that ethical barrier, they could have easily been taken out of context and easily offended someone. The main challenge was to create a top which wouldn’t offend the models. As racism is not spoken about enough, I felt people wouldn’t be comfortable with talking about their issues and experiences, however, I feel this project allowed a platform and a community to come together, a lot of women could relate to the tops.
Another consideration was the photographers. The photographer had to support the message for pushing the representation of race. Their ethics had to support the message of complexity and diversity. This led onto the models being ethnic, the models had to be from a different cultural heritage background, not all from the same background. The publication had to establish complexity, this message could’ve easily been lost by not finding the right models.
