Prototypes

Consideration of Format and Binding techniques.

For the format, the quality of the print would have to be at a higher definition as the content is photography base. Therefore visiting a professional print room was required. The format was printed on a coated paper which allowed the images to come out better.

Due to the print room only printing on PDF this limited the binding options to a saddle bind/perfect bind. For the publication the perfect bind would be more appropriate.

Investigation of Binding techniques

To expand the research further, the investigation of watching binding tutorials on Youtube, helped me create prototypes for the final outcome. Originally I wanted to use a kettle stitch which would of been glued onto a hard back cover.

Prototypes

Coptic stitch Prototype

Marking out where the holds will be placed to allow an equal straight line when stitching.

Creating holes for the front cover to create a defined finished outcome.

Creating holes using an Awl.

Continuing the threading sequence. Ensure the pressure is even to reduce rips and to create a neat finish outcome.

The final outcome: with this stitch it is more appropriate for an open bind which will make the pages to be more visible compared to a glued bind.

Creating a mini Kettle stitch bind.

Ensure the dots are in the accurate place to ensure the pages are even.

This prototype shows that more pages will be required to create the zine to look more full. This prototype was not as successful, however when. producing this will be required to use more pages and ensure the dots are in the same position, this will be through templates.

Saddle Stitch.

Saddle stitch will be more appropriate for a zine with less pages. Perhaps for this, this stitch will not be as appropriate, the bind may need to be stabled. However doing this may loose the aesthetic of a magazine.

After creating the prototypes, a glued bind was decided to be more appropriate. The content was glued and a paper cover was created on a thicker GSM. The front cover was measured accurately when the spine was dried. The use of a template was used first to ensure a clean finish.
