Alone Together: Zine Development

For this brief I intend to create an illustrative zine which reflects experiences and stories from Yazidi Women during the time of the Genocide of Yazidism. The zine will highlight Nadia Murad and show the idea of hope.

Creating thumbnail sketches of characters for the zine.

I then created a thumbnails relating the peacocks, as the peacock is one of the sacred animals in Yazidism as well as taking on feedback from the critique by including peacocks in the zine.

I then created thumbnails for type ideas, influenced by geometric type by incorporating English type with Yazidi symbols. I also created a thumbnail of script type to show the idea of something people traditional and ancient relating the the Yazidi religion.

I then developed these thumbnails onto Illustrator using a drawing tablet. Initially, I created black and white prototypes for the illustrations.

The peacock illustration was influenced by the peacock angel and how the peacock angel is portrayed in the Yazidi culture. The background go the thumbnails includes ancient Yazidi symbols to create a link and concept towards the illustrations. To develop this further I could of found out how to spell the names in the symbols to create a deeper meaning towards the illustrations. To develop these monochrome examples further, I needed to consider the colour scheme. During the critique, it was stated to explore colour schemes which relates to peacocks, or create a background which was pale and sensitive. Taking this advice on board, I created prototypes of the Pantone colour teal,  as well as creating an ink background to create a sensitive angelic approach towards the illustrations.

From the feedback, it was stated that the background might make the illustration look to overwhelming for the outcome of a zine. The colour teal was more successful as it creates more of a brand identity and will be more recognised. It was stated that the colour looked more unique and original.

Final Outcomes, creating teal colour illustrations developed on Illustrator.

Selecting type which is appropriate for the zine. Initially, I created a typeface which incorporates Yazidi symbols with English type. I developed this concept onto illustrator. This relates to Edward Said's theory of Orientalism. It relates to the idea of modernising the way of communication, as the Middle-East is seen as backwards (Edward Said, 1978)

I then developed this typeface further by applying the colour scheme and making the type more thicker to make the words stand out more. I incorporated the elements of peacock feathers to signify the idea of sensitivity.

During the critique it was stated to created this typeface for the brand identity, then within the zine find a more eligible typeface for the stories and quotes.

The typeface for the body text selected is Baskerville. The serif typeface creates a more magical approach towards the publication. The typeface also includes more of a dated feel which relates to the concept of something being ancient.

For the quotes from the stories, I wanted the typeface to look decorative and hand-written to create a more personal feel towards the zine. The typeface selected is Snell Roundhand. The feedback stated to incorporate more design around the type to make the zine more exciting and to create a link the image with type. An example of this is the type used to explain the Yazidi religion within the zine. Initially, the type was minimal on the page. however inspiration from traditional Yazidi tattoos were used to create a pattern element to link the type with the visuals.

This page was developed further by using each paragraph on a separate page to make the text more enjoyable to read. I then applied design inspired from traditional Yazidi tattoos.

I created thumbnail sketched inspired by the tattoos, creating a sense of a border which will surround the type. The thumbnails were developed further on photoshop using the pen and shape tool.

To develop all of these elements together, I will develop a PDF prototype of how the zine will look like. This will be developed using InDesign. Thumbnail sketches were produced to show the order of the zine.
