How does fashion link with graphic design?
A considerable amount of literature will be researched focusing on the connection between fashion and graphic design. A considerable amount of practical work will be produced in response to this research. My knowledge in fashion and beauty will help steer practical projects. Contextual analysis into existing fashion brands will be explored through the investigation into concepts and meanings.
The practical will be divided into 8 briefs, where 8 outcomes will be produced. The practical process will be through the production of making and testing, this will be demonstrated through initial ideas and prototypes. Critical feedback will help steer projects further to help develop the outcome to the best of its ability. One of the key idea generations will be through thumbnail sketches. This will be recorded through an online journal.
Relevant theories will be investigated, continuing from the last module, Context of practise (OUGD601). The theories previously discussed in OUGD601 will be explored further: Orientalism by Edward Said (1978) and cultural appropriation. This relates to the lack of diversity within the fashion industry, and how fashion uses cultural appropriation. My practice will help resolve this problem by creating content which empowers people of colour, as there is a lack of representation of people of colour in the media. Therefore, the target market will be focused towards the people of colour community.
My practice will explore my own experiences, as well as creating a platform which will allow individuals to explore their own experiences from issues which they have faced. This will be recorded by interviews. The topics will discuss issues which people of colour are faced in today's society. To conclude, my practice will explore this message which helps empower the POC community through the use of fashion, as this platform allows a voice through confidence.
