Leeds Art University hold a Caribbean and Afro society where they empower people of colour including the black and again community. As Leeds Art University only holds 11% of ethnic people, the society helps bring together a network within the university.
As a first project for the society, they created an exhibition which will be held at the corn Exchange. This allowed students to participate in the Exhibition with a piece of work which celebrated Black History Month 2018.
IAMDDB is a Manchester based rapper and singer focusing on R&B and soul music. Her cultural heritage is Angolan and Portuguese.
Contextual Research
Jasmin Sehra
Jasmin Sehra is a London based artist passionate about identity, empowerment, self-love and positivity through her brand, Paradise Girl. Jasmin Sehra incorporates her Punjabi heritage, fashion and arts through illustration, typography and design. Alumna of London College of Communication in Graphic and Media Design, her first project to gain popularity was 'Bollyhood series'. Jasmin has had the opportunity to create bespoke artwork for MTV's London headquarters. She has also worked with Levis, hosting a customisation stand at the Levi Haus Festival Party and in-store visual display for Lazy Oaf. This research os useful as it empowers cultural identity, as well as the artist incorporating personality in her work. I want the outcome of the poster to highlight culture and identity. Jasmin Sehra plays around with layouts and compositions which I feel will be interesting to incorporate in my practice. She also explores popular culture which its relevant towards the brief.
Wireframes
These sketches show wireframe as a plan of how the poster will look. This plan will be developed further on Photoshop and Illustrator.
Development
Feedback stated that the poster looked more finished with the border and complete.
This design was a new experience on Illustrator as I used the tool which applied photos in a shape. I created the background on Illustrator. I then saved the background as a JPEG and applied this onto Photoshop, where I used layers to create the poster. For the vocal point of IAMDDB, I used the magic wand tool to remove the background. I then placed all the elements together to create a composition. Overall, the poster was successful, however it looked to similar to the contextual research. If I had more time, I could of incorporated more of my own style towards the poster. However, th contextual research helped develop my Illustrator skills further by applying images into shapes, which will be useful for future projects.

Final Outcome
The poster was selected for the exhibition, this is a photograph evidencing the exhibition.
Description for the poster
In celebrating Black History Month, this graphics piece promotes an emerging artist in 2018. IAMDDB is the lovechild of trap and jazz. This piece celebrates her cultural heritage of her Portuguese and Angolan roots. The background includes patterns from Angolan festivals, which the singer participated in. Her hit single 'shade' which is applied onto the border to outline the success of the individual. The element of the star comes from the Angolan flag.
To summarise, this poster has more character and energy which I want my work to develop into. It also has an urban aesthetic which I will further my research into this style of design. I can develop this further by creating a rebrand of an emerging artist from the black community. This will explore different types which are more subjective and decorative such as black lettering.
Overall, the feedback received was successful as well as the poster being featured in the exhibition. As this was a day brief, I was limited to the amount of research and development in design. For future briefs, I will allow more time to show more of a development process.
