Websites
A feature title- clear and bold to signify presence. The San
serif typeface establishes a fresh contemporary approach towards the magazine
company. The use of a wide kerning creates a sense of clarity and comes across
less intimidating. The illustrative background of leisure behaviour by a lady
creates a feminine approach towards the magazine which establishes target
market. The pastel colour scheme creates a delicate approach, which perhaps
suggest the magazine will talk about issues where the reader will feel reassured
and relaxed. The website is categorised into sections of different topics which
the magazine explores. The type is thin and easily readable, this approach
creates more focus on the title which will want you to explore the other
categories.
The use of the advertisement promotes other companies which
relates to the target market. It has a purpose of advising woman who have kids.
This reveals the target market is open to a young mother. The feature question
of ‘How to’ establishes the magazine is to advise the user.
The layout introduces a four-column layout which creates
structure towards the information. The colour palette uses nudes which establishes
perhaps an older target market. The use of colour helps separate different
topics which encourages the user to click on that item. The website includes an
animation which catches the user’s attention as well as creating a something
which is visually exciting, it makes the user scroll down as the techniques are
varied. The Shop section includes slides to hint to what the clothes shops are
like. It also encourages organisation and a system towards the design.
The structure includes a side bar allocated on the right Vertical
lines are used to establish keywords and points of interests in the paragraph,
the initial idea. When the reader finds something they like, they will click on
that option.
The F pattern layout
The designer has applied a navigation bar across the right
corner. This makes it convenient to users who are searching for keywords. The
structure is broken up to disrupt the routine. This includes varied column structures
to keep the page stimulated.
The F pattern is used to fit the user as we are comfortable
reading from left to right. However, the problem with the F pattern is it is to
common which will easily bore the user.
The front page introduces the same structure as Nylon, However includes more contact for the first page. Perhaps this is to powerful, but could also suggest that the designer is introducing many topics to interest the user which in my opinion works more effectively. The entered structure creates clarity which doesn't overwhelm the user.
Vogue breaks the system of the F rule. The structure focuses
on a more centred composition including a varied size of the images. This
creates structure and clarity. The oversized images work effectively as this
attracts attentions visually.
The alternating image and type from left to right is to
generic. This structure could be altered. The designer has done this to alter
the user’s eyesight, to break the ‘F rule’.
Pretty Little Thing have broken the rules of the F layout.
The designer has created more of a creative approach which is more subjective compared
to the previous examples. The structure is packed and can come across overwhelming.
As the company formed online the promotion had to be eye-catching and
memorable. The use of oversized images creates something to be more visually
exciting. The use of images being within shapes creates a sense of dynamic and versatility
which the brand suggests. The concept is fun, contemporary and approaches a
younger target market. Perhaps if Nylon created this concept with the website
which relates to the magazine would be more visually exciting. The magazine
layout includes fragmented type which questions structure. Perhaps applying
that dynamic to the website would make it more appealing, rather than generic. The designer has played with column grids by applying shape to create the images to be more eye-catching and visually exciting.
Apps
The iPhone is the most recognisable app for the app layout. The curved edges relates to the design of the product. The layout is set in a simple grid with San serif type to create a contemporary feel. The visual imagery within the app acts as pictograms which become recognisable so the user will be able to identify the app without reading what it is. Each app works in stages, each stage will fit whiten the theme of the programme, this is shown perhaps through colour, typeface. The rearrangement of apps creates an element of fun so the user will come to the app more than once. It has the idea of addiction, brought he apps appearing less intimidating through the size. The bottom bar relates to the computer; these are the 'main' apps which may be most visited or are personal to the user to create an emotional bond (be goals). The touch screen feature creates an element of satisfaction which can not be applied on a computer. The concept of the phone is small and versatile, therefore the apps relates to this concept. The set password is conveyed as something personal and unique towards the user, which initially creates a sense of a bond already.
Why are iPhone App layouts more recognisable in todays society?
Samsung have applied the same concept have applied the apps with pointed edges. The extra elements are applied on the homepage however look to overpacked. The use of boxes used create a sense of unity and a special bond towards the user. In my opinion this structures used as it is more recognisable. Perhaps the problem is the graph doesn't push the boundaries.
Microsoft have designed the app which vary size and play with layout. This layout perhaps come across very intimidating as is perhaps go pass the user's comfort zone. The pictograms are recreated in simple colour palette. Perhaps this shows diversity and contemporary approach which is not recognised. Microsoft have gained competition with Apple perhaps due t this diverse design concept.
Due to a simple colour palette other pictograms become perhaps unrecognisable. This is perhaps a problem compared to apple as the pictograms are easily identified. The layout is more cluttered, and due to the user looking at the phone all day this could perhaps be a problem as the user wants something more easy readable.
